R.I.P., Pat Morita

Pat Mortia passed away yesterday. Mark Evanier has a nice post about him on his blog. All I can add is that Pat secured a place in American culture with his role as Mr. Miyagi. I've never seen any of the Karate Kid films, and yet parts of it have been familiar to me for years. And generally those parts feature Pat Morita.

Wax on, everybody.

Mark Evanier's blog has become the "which celebrity has recently died" blog. Sad about Pat Morita, but why is Mark so ghoulish all the time?

He's noticed it, too -- to the point where he recently put up a photo of Jonathan Winters and people immediately thought he'd died.

I don't think he's ghoulish -- he just knows a lot of people in showbiz, and there are many that he doesn't know whose work has touched him anyway. And with that large a pool of people to write about -- especially in the generations that were entertaining him when he was a kid -- some are bound to die. And if he has something to say about them, he figures it's a good time to say it.

But yeah, he's aware of the perception. People have said, "You're not dead until you're dead on Mark's blog," and there's soem merit in that.

But I truly appreciate his write-ups. Many of these performers I only know as faces in old movies, and Mark always helps me put their careers -- and oftentimes our loss -- in perspective.

That said, Mark writes about a lot of other things dear to his heart, and is one of my very favorite blogs to read. I never miss a post.
