To the Left!

I just typed "left-hand side" into a document and thought of this song. I'd say it holds up better than 90 percent of everything else that was on the radio in 1982.

90%?

I certainly wouldn't go that far. As I've gotten older, I've come to the conclusion that 80s music was far better overall than I gave it credit for at the time. Sure, there was some crap, but folks back then were more willing to do some experimental stuff. In that situation, not everything will stick to the wall.

Well, I guess what I mean specifically is not that it's a better song than 90% of what was recorded back then, but that it feels less dated. Which is probably a cultural thing -- to most Americans, reggae is reggae, no matter when it was recorded. Bob Marley & Desmond Dekker don't sound dated to me, they sounds like Bob Marley & Desmond Dekker. To someone more immersed in that musical tradition -- and its more modern forms -- they might sound more "old-school" (though no less awesome).

Reggae seems a little more timeless to me, because it's from an alternate musical timeline.

Other music from 1982 includes "Pac-Man Fever", "867-5309", and "Eye of the Tiger", so I generally agree. On the other hand, the Police, the Go-Gos, and Hall & Oates were also big. Seriously, though, I like the observation about what "dated" actually means.
