Now if that were a ferret, it would've been funny.

Ouch! Point taken.

But your comment made me laugh too, so who knows?

The first thing I always think of whenever I see a dead cat or dog by the side of the road or even a "Lost Pet" sign is that there's some kid out there who's lost his friend. If that kid saw that sign....

Tragedy is always the soul of comedy. It's only funny when it's not your tragedy.

Or as Homer Simpson said upon viewing a grisly driver's ed video: "It's funny 'cuz we don't know them."

The first rule of writing is, "Don't kill the [animal]." For some reason, you can do anything you want to (adult) human characters, but God forbid the horse should get a splinter. However, Wonder Boys broke this rule to great effect. I loved the movie but because of the dog I didn't let Chris watch it.

Heck, Alien is a terrific film, but I can admit that Ripley is seriously crazy to go back for the cat.

Of course, the designers of the Nostromo should be locked up for putting the self-destruct sequence on the other side of the ship from the escape pod, so nobody's perfect.
