Did You Know?

Milton von Fleimanchen, a Viennese confectioner, once crafted exquisite hands out of marzipan for his handless mutant-retard son, Fritz.

He didn't make that mistake twice.

You know, I've heard it suggested that Fritz is not a true HMR.

Some historians theorize that what von Fleimanchen crafted were actually not prosthetic hands, but gloves. Fritz was known to have a cronic sweet tooth....

Proponents of the so-called "marzipan glove theory" also believe Fritz is the real-life inspiration behind Agustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Interesting. I think you may be mistaking Fritz for Hans “Klebrigefinger” van Heusen, a notorious pickpocket who operated at the same time von Fleimanchen operated his candy store (1888-1907). The crooks marzipan gloves enhanced his stickyfingered rep. However, the police never did track down who made van Heusen’s gloves. Von Fleimanchen looks like a very likely suspect in light of what we now know.

Either way, though, it’s food for thought.

As for the Gloop connection? Any kid who would eat his own hands off would certainly get my attention, if I were Roald Dahl. I'd like to see some evidence, but it sounds like a match made in Loompaland.

Think about it Rob. How many marzipan masters do you think there are in the world. Klebrigefinger van Heusen and Fritz are one and the same!

Wow, Dave, y'made me Google.

If you want to see a bizarre reworking of Mad Love (not that the original premise isn't strange enough), check out Cowards Bend the Knee by Guy Madden. I wrote about it sometime last year, and I'll dig up the link when I have a chance.

Marzipan hands? I thought Marzipan didn't have hands, neither did Homestar.

Is Homesar the most famous H M-R?

Thanks for the Guy Maddin tip, Rob.
I've added several of his DVDs to my BloqBustier Q.
