Every Day I Write the Book

Well, today and yesterday, anyway. And many, many days before that. I'm hip-deep in my Angola book, but finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just type up my corrections for this draft, and then it's on to the backmatter.

Whoo-hah!

Not that this backmatter is a piece of cake. Ugh. No sleep till Luanda!

Woo-hoo! That light is a sweet sight indeed. Go, Rob! (Imagine us all standing in the crowd cheering, handing you squeeze bottles full of Gatorade.)

Is backmatter like an index, appendix, etc.?

Thankfully, it’s not the index. That’s a skill set I don’t have yet, and at any rate is best handled after layout and pagination.

There are some appendices – a glossary, a set of Angolan recipes, some sources for further reading (online and in books), a calendar of Angolan holidays (like most of Africa, Angola celebrates Easter on a Monday), a timeline and assorted other kibbles and bits.

I’ve got one last bit dangling – suggested projects for students – but other than that, all done. To celebrate: Rangers vs Flyers at Madison Square Garden. (Well, actually it’s not to celebrate – it was an xmas gift for Kathy – but its working out that way.)

Doesn't the word "backmatter" make you think of something that ought to be removed with a salve of some type?

That's about it, yeah. It kinda feels like one final barnacle to scrape off before I can have a weekend again.

What is this "weekend" thing you speak of?
